At VyStar Credit Union, we believe in the importance of education and financial literacy. That’s why we are so passionate about our High School Branch Program, which provides hands-on financial training and on-the-job experience to students by letting them manage on-campus branches.
While our High School Branch Program encourages and facilitates learning, we recognize there is an upcoming opportunity to do more to invest in our leaders of tomorrow. On Nov. 3, Duval County voters will decide on a half-penny referendum. If approved, money generated from the half-penny will go directly toward public schools in Duval County to improve education and learning conditions.
School buildings in Duval County, on average, are the oldest in the state, according to research from the Jacksonville Public Education Fund. Many need basic maintenance upgrades such as better air conditioners, roofing, flooring and window replacements as state funding cuts have resulted in a maintenance backlog.
Funding from the half-penny would help cut overhead costs, increase resources needed for teaching, ensure our schools receive security upgrades and create jobs. It would also help reduce the problem of overcrowding, since a portion of the funds will result in new schools being built in Duval County.
School districts across the state have recently turned to voters to approve additional funding. Locally, the half-penny would cost the average family about $6 per month and would amount to a $1.9 billion economic stimulus. We believe that would greatly benefit students and set all of Jacksonville up for future success.
If you are passionate about education and the long-term commitment to our city’s success, we hope you will further research the referendum and ensure your voice is heard when it comes time to vote in November.
